Mr. Ribeiro, 39, is the founder of CelfixX. “Fortune plays a role because, sadly, not all damaged phones are repairable,” he explains. Mr. Ribeiro has been performing surgery on electronics since his youth. Growing up in India, he recalls opening gadgets as a boy to familiarize himself with their innards. “I was always tinkering around with the small, animal-shaped alarm clocks lying around at home,” he remembers. The early fascination led to him to study electronics at technology institutes in Agra and Delhi, through which he acquired several certifications related to mending electrical devices. In 1996, when Mr. Ribeiro was still training as a student, the first signs of the mobile-phone boom were showing in India. While his countrymen would debate the merits of rival companies, such as Nokia and Motorola, Mr. Ribeiro had no favorite. His mission was to understand them all.
